News & Notes: Wilson School Dean Paxson elected to American Economic Association

Her yearlong tenure will begin in April 2012.

AEA’s aims are “the encouragement of economic research, especially the historical and statistical study of the actual conditions of industrial life, the issue of publications on economic subjects and the encouragement of perfect freedom of economic discussion,” according to its website.

The association has a membership of over  18,000. Half of the members are academics, about 15 percent are involved in business and industry, and the rest work in federal, state and local government or nonprofit organizations.

Paxson has served as dean of the Wilson School since 2009.

Currently, she is a research associate with the National Bureau of Economic Research as well as with the University’s Office of Population Research.

She has also been involved in several NIH-funded studies about the health and wellbeing of children and students, and helped found an NIA Center for the Economics and Demography of Aging at the University. She also edits the WWS-Brookings Institution journal The Future of Children.
