News & Notes: West criticizes presidential candidate Cain for comments about racism in modern-day US

“Black people have been working hard for decades,” West said during a CNN interview on Monday. “I think he also knows that if brother Anthony Davis — a brother who was just put to death — were a white Wall Street banker brother, that the response in the nation would have been very different as opposed to a poor black brother.”

PBS host Tavis Smiley, who is currently taking part in an 11-state tour with West to raise awareness of poverty, criticized the media’s focus on Cain’s statements.

“It just troubles me ... that all these cable channels just go for this nonsense,” he said. “It’s almost silly to respond because the evidence is overwhelming.”

Smiley added that evidence in statistics and the size of President Barack Obama’s security detail speak for themselves about the state of racism in the United States.

Last Sunday, Cain said on CNN that some people use racism as an excuse when they cannot achieve their goals.
