News & Notes: Steward to participate in Chief Executive Program

The Chief Executive Program is comprised of 100 international “thought leaders” in the arts who will address issues facing the field. The issues include increased competition for leisure time and dollars as well as the challenges and opportunities presented by the information age.

“James is an outstanding leader in the field and was identified by a number of prominent cultural figures as a charismatic and thoughtful chief executive,” NAS President and CEO Russell Willis Taylor said in a statement. “We are delighted that he will be taking part in this program, as we know he will bring insights to the other participants as well.”

Over the next two years, the program will organize cross-disciplinary workshops to allow the arts sector to flourish in the next century.

“Cultural organizations are at an important crossroads where we risk becoming marginalized in the tumult of things, competing for time and attention in a world of cyber noise,” Steward said in a statement.

Steward has served as director of the Art Museum since April 2009.
