Krueger will focus on President Obama’s job creation efforts, which the president has stated are a top priority for his administration.
In a previous stint in the White House, where he served as an assistant secretary and chief economist at the Treasury Department for 17 months before returning to the University in 2010, Krueger championed stimulus policies such as a temporary tax credit for employers adding to their work force. Obama is currently considering this policy.
When officially appointed, Krueger will be the third person to hold the post of CEA chairman under Obama. He will replace Obama’s longtime adviser Austan Goolsbee, who has returned to the University of Chicago to teach.
Krueger has also served under the Clinton administration, serving as chief economist for the Department of Labor from August 1994 to August 1995.
