A seven-member committee has been appointed to find a new dean for the University’s School of Architecture by the beginning of the next academic year.
Current dean Stan Allen GS ’88 will step down at the end of the 2011-12 academic year to take a year-long sabbatical, after which he will return to his teaching and design work in architecture. Allen has been the Architecture School’s dean since 2002.
“Dean Allen’s achievements, and the strength of the school as a whole, will provide his successor with special opportunities to build on the foundations that he has laid, as well as to explore new directions,” Provost Christopher Eisgruber ’83 said in a statement. “This is an exciting time to be searching for a dean, and I expect that the committee will see excellent candidates.”
Members of the committee include chair and architecture professor Elizabeth Diller, University Executive Vice President Mark Burstein, architecture professor Beatriz Colomina, art and archeology professor Hal Foster and architecture professor Guy Nordenson. Others include Architecture School Advisory Council member, Columbia professor of architectural history Barry Bergdoll and Columbia professor of architecture, planning and preservation Bernard Tschumi.
President Tilghman will receive candidate recommendations from the committee prior to appointing the new dean, who will be approved by the Board of Trustees.
