News & Notes: Aaron Burr, Class of 1772, nominated for New Jersey Hall of Fame

The hall of fame inducts members in categories such as history, arts and entertainment, enterprise and sports.

Burr is best known for slaying Alexander Hamilton during a duel in 1804. Burr also served as the vice president of the United States under Thomas Jefferson from 1801 to 1805. Burr’s father, Aaron Burr, Sr., also served as a president and founder of the University

Other nominees include Thomas Paine, Alan Alda and Joyce Carol Oates. Current members of the hall of fame include Buzz Aldrin, Walt Whitman, Carl Sagan and humanities professor emeritus Toni Morrison.

The New Jersey Hall of Fame was created to honor citizens of the state that have made “invaluable contributions to society and the world beyond,” according to the organization’s website. The group plans to set up interactive museums to educate people about the members of the hall of fame.
