News and Notes: University College London announces plans to combat grade inflation

The move follows in the footsteps of a select number of American universities, led by Princeton and its grade deflation program, that have taken steps to reduce grade inflation.

Most UK universities use a system of classes for assessing students. The highest possible mark is “first class,” followed by “upper second class,” “lower second class” and “pass.”

However, administrators such as Provost Malcolm Grant of UCL have said that grading inflation has gotten out of hand in recent years.

“Award inflation over the past three decades has led to student performance being essentially recognized by classification into only two main groups: first class and upper second class honors. It is a crude and undistinguished model,” Grant said to The Telegraph. Because the GPA system is well-recognized around the world, Grant added, the university’s shift will also help students be evaluated by organizations around the world.

Calls for a reform of the UK grading system have become more common in recent years, according to The Telegraph.
