Decision on Valley Road School delayed

A meeting that was initially scheduled for Tuesday at John Witherspoon Middle School was cancelled. It was aimed at deciding between the Essential Services Proposal and a community center project to replace the site at 369 Witherspoon Street.

The ESP is a plan for a new building to accommodate the Princeton Fire Department, the Princeton First Aid and Rescue Squad and Corner House. The competing proposal from a coalition of Borough nonprofit organizations is for a community center to be built for use by non-profits and community groups.

“After in-depth study, consultation with counsel and lengthy deliberation, the Board is rejecting both current proposals,” Superintendent of Schools Judith Wilson and Board of Education President Rebecca Cox said in a letter addressed to Princeton Borough Mayor Mildred Trotman, Princeton Township Mayor Chad Goerner, Borough Emergency Services Director Mark Freda and Edwin Schmierer of law firm Mason, Griffin & Pierson. This is because neither had “fully met the Board’s established criteria,” they said.

The letter was obtained from an anonymous source.

“We must be certain that we have exhausted all possibilities for use of the site that tie closely to our core mission of education,” Wilson and Cox said. They added that the decision was reached after consultation with lawyers, architects, structural engineers, township engineers and zoning experts.
