CNN announced on Wednesday that “In the Arena,” the prime-time talkshow hosted by Eliot Spitzer ’81, would no longer be a part of the network’s nightly programming, dampening the quick ascension of the scandalized former New York governor.
The show, initially titled “Parker Spitzer” and co-anchored by conservative columnist Kathleen Parker, has struggled to achieve strong viewership since its introduction in October. Parker left the show in February, a move widely presumed to be due to backstage tension between the two hosts, leading to the reformatting of the show under a single-host format.
In a statement, Spitzer said that he “thoroughly enjoyed his time at CNN.”
"We engaged serious people in conversations about national and global issues in a way that was informative and challenging," he said. "I believe that we provided diverse and valuable perspectives during the show's tenure.”
Though Spitzer’s comments seem to indicate that he will no longer be involved with CNN, an internal memo to CNN staff obtained by Politico indicated that he may remain part of the network.
"We are in discussions with Eliot Spitzer about an alternative role," CNN Executive Vice President Ken Jautz said in the memo. "We thank him and the entire 'In the Arena' team for creating a program that moved many political and economic issues into the national spotlight."
