News & Notes: Schlissel ’79 tapped as Brown’s provost

“He is above all an excellent and highly rated scholar and teacher,” Ruth Simmons, the president of Brown, said in a press release. “His experience in research, both in the laboratory and administratively as dean of biological sciences, will enable him to become an effective leader at Brown.”

Schlissel, the current dean of biological sciences at the College of Letters & Science at the University of California, Berkeley, will begin his five-year appointment on July 1.

“Brown is attractive because it is a national resource and has a great undergraduate program and a wonderful and growing faculty and ambitions to contribute even more to society,” Schlissel said to The Providence Journal.

He received his A.B. in biochemical sciences from Princeton and later attended medical school at Johns Hopkins, where he earned a master’s degree and a doctorate degree.
