News & Notes: Mexican composer Catan ’77 passes away

Daniel Catan ’77, the first Mexican composer to have an opera produced in the United States, passed away last Friday at the age of 62 from unknown causes.

Catan composed several operas and orchestral pieces as well as a ballet, among other arrangements, during his lifetime. He was the recipient of a 2000 Guggenheim Fellowship for his contributions to the opera world.

His latest work, the opera “Il Postino,” premiered in September and starred Placido Domingo as the poet Pablo Neruda. Catan was known for his close creative friendship with Domingo.

Catan earned a doctorate in music from Princeton and an undergraduate degree in philosophy from the University of Sussex. While at Princeton, he worked closely with famed composer Milton Babbitt GS ’92, who passed away in January.
