Less than half of students accepted to international summer programs

Acceptance numbers for the Princeton in Spain and Princeton in Bermuda summer programs were released this week.

Of the 90 students who applied to Princeton in Spain, 35 were accepted.

Of the 35 who applied to Princeton in Bermuda, 16 were chosen, with an additional three students placed on a waitlist.

Now in its fourth year, Princeton in Spain is a four-week program held in Toledo, Spain, and open to current freshmen and sophomores. While in Toledo, students are divided into two levels and take either SPA 207S: Studies in Spanish Language and Culture or SPA 310S: Spanish Art and Culture.

Students participating in the program cited an interest in Spanish language and culture as a motivating factor for applying. Many said they were also surprised by their acceptance.

Redab Alnifaidy ’14 said that after hearing negative responses from the summer internships to which she applied she did not expect to be chosen for the program.

“I was elated to hear the great news, and I realized my love of and genuine interest in the language must have come through very clearly in my application, convincing the department to give me a spot in the program,” she said.

Along with taking classes, participants will be able to explore the cities of Toledo, Madrid and Segovia.

“What I am most looking forward to, and am most grateful for, is the simple fact that I will be able to take advantage of a month in Toledo devoted to language study,” Alnifaidy said.

Kelsey Janke ’14 explained she applied to the program due to a desire to become fluent in Spanish and immerse herself in Spanish culture. “The whole trip seems amazing, but I think I’m most excited to learn about Spanish culture and then actually visit the sites,” she said.

Princeton in Bermuda is a similar four-week course taught in June in Bermuda. Participants will take EEB 312: Marine Biology and have the opportunity to snorkel and experience hands-on lab time.

Kristen Schott ’14 explained that while she had always wanted to study abroad, she loved being on campus in the school year so summer study was the perfect solution.

“The Bermuda program was especially appealing for me because it’s a really unique opportunity — I’ve taken biology classes before, but never had the chance to really experience field study. Plus I’ve always been fascinated by the ocean,” she said.
