Event: Late Night Skate

Frustrated because your friends won’t watch the broomball championship with you? Angsty because your love of Michael Jackson and skating seem mutually exclusive? Love hot chocolate, pretzels and lots of fun? Princeton’s got your back! Come out for the final Skate Night of the year at Baker Rink on Thursday from 9:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. Festivities will begin with the broomball championship followed by skating at 10:30 p.m. with free skate rentals, hot chocolate, fun and Michael Jackson tunes. The first 250 students will receive a free Michael Jackson tribute item.

Music: Princeton University Orchestra Concert

This concert will feature the winners of the 2010 Concerto Competition: Yoon Won Song ’11 performing the Sibelius violin concerto and Jessica Anastasio ’11 playing flute in a Mozart piece. After these talented senior soloists showcase their artistic abilities, the orchestra will play a contemporary piece — the debut of graduate student Mark Dancigers’ “Concerto for Electric Guitar and Orchestra.”

Film: Eastern State: Living Behind the Walls

When the Eastern State Penitentiary began using solitary confinement as a way to reform the prison system and rehabilitate criminals, no one anticipated the psychological abuse that would result. This gripping documentary sheds light on one of the most infamous prisons in America. The film is part of a series presented by the Center for African American Studies entitled “Imprisonment of a Race” and is co-sponsored by 12 University organizations.

Theater: The Student Playwright Festival

The Student Playwright Festival will present three new plays written by University students. The various plays contain a bedtime story, the theme of sexual frustration, a man whose imaginary friend breaks up with him and a soon-to-be-married couple whose parents are meeting for the first time. The talented and original student writing, directing and acting is sure to provide plenty of entertainment.

Film: True Grit

“True Grit,” a stellar remake of the 1969 John Wayne classic, is playing for free at the Princeton Garden Theatre this weekend. The film stars Jeff Bridges as one-eyed drunkard U.S. marshal Rooster Cogburn and newcomer Hailee Steinfeld as Maddie Ross, a fast-talking teenager with an eye for revenge.  Directed by Joel Coen and Ethan Coen ’79, this sweeping film returns the Western genre to its roots and packs a powerful emotional punch.

Film: I Love You Philip Morris

Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor team up for “I Love You Phillip Morris,” a quirky comedy-drama about never giving up on a seemingly impossible romance. Carrey channels everything from his great performances in movies such as “The Truman Show” and “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” into loveable con man Steven Russell as he breaks out of prison again and again in order to be with his love.
