Braun, a former U.S. senator from Illinois, received West’s endorsement at an event during which she likened the front-runner in the mayoral race, Rahm Emanuel, to Adolf Hitler in “The Producers.”
“The joke in it was, [Hitler] was a kind man, a gentle man,” Braun said, adding that, in mayoral candidate Emanuel, “we’re getting the kind man, the gentle man on television,” according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
The Sun-Times also reported on Monday that some polls predicted that Emanuel may receive close to 50 percent of the votes, while Braun may receive as little as 6 percent on election day next Tuesday.
Braun has released an internal poll that shows she has about 23 percent of voters’ support, in comparison to a predicted 45 percent for Emanuel.
West said to the Chicago public radio station WBEZ that he believes “a Rahm Emanuel victory would be a slap in the face.”
“I’m here to support poor and working people,” he added, “specifically black Chicago.”
West also called Emanuel an outsider and said he was tied to big businesses, adding that he feels Chicago can do better.
