News & Notes: University curator given numismatic honor

University Curator of Numismatics Alan Stahl received the Medal of the Royal Numismatic Society for 2010 in London on Jan. 18.

Stahl was acknowledged for his contributions to the study of numismatic history and methodology as well as his decades of teaching numismatics — the study or collection of currency — as an academic discipline by Nicholas Mayhew, president of the Royal Numismatic Society and director of the Winton Institute for Monetary History at the University of Oxford.

In particular, Mayhew praised Stahl’s book “Zecca: The Mint of Venice in the Middle Ages" and Stahl's earlier work on Merovingian coinage of France.

The medal has been awarded annually to an individual “highly distinguished for services to numismatic science” since 1883. Stahl is the ninth American to receive the award.
