News & Notes: Whitman '77 named to board of Hewlett-Packard

This is Whitman’s newest venture since she lost to governor-elect Jerry Brown in the California gubernatorial race last November. Whitman received national attention for spending $119 million of her own $1.3 billion fortune in the race, shattering previous personal contribution records.

Whitman’s appointment, along with the appointments of four other executives, added to the executive turmoil that has plagued HP in recent years. Former HP CEO Michael Hurd was forced to resign six months ago after accusations of sexual harassment.

The previous board of directors received harsh criticism for the way it handled the situation. Whitman’s hiring has been cited by Sanford C. Bernstein & Company analyst A. M. Sacconaghi, Jr. as an attempt to create a fresh start for the company.

As CEO of eBay, Whitman transformed the company from a small startup to one the world’s largest Internet companies. She is the namesake of Whitman College and the parent of two Princeton students, Griff Harsh ’09 and Will Harsh ’11.
