Get ready for some 'PURE' rock 'n roll

This Saturday, a musical collective takes the stage at the Wilson Blackbox Theater. Though you might not have heard of the Princeton University Rock Ensemble, the group is ready to make sure you hear them loud and clear this weekend.

PURE only became an official student group last May. But in the short time since then, the group has grown to include 30 undergraduate and graduate students, as well as a visiting student from Seoul, Korea.

President Anthony Sacco ’13 said he founded the group last spring out of personal aspiration.

“In high school I really wanted to be in a band, so I thought it would be cool to form a big band, like the ones you see your favorite musicians touring with,”  Sacco explained.

What makes PURE different from other bands on campus?

“First of all, we play pure classic rock,” said Christina Bott ’13, one of the lead singers.

But it’s not just song selection or music style that distinguish PURE from other groups. PURE is distinctly democratic in its organization and makeup. “We vote on all of our songs,” Bott explained.

The membership is also eclectic, with musicians with backgrounds ranging from jazz to opera to hardcore metal. “It’s a good mix of different opinions and different sounds,” Bott said.

“We have a lot of good music that would be great to dance to — nothing that would end up boring,” he said. “We try to come up with something for everyone.”

It’s their diverse sound that PURE will use to recreate classic rock tunes like “Hotel California,” “Magic Carpet Ride” and “Runnin’ With the Devil.” And with up to eight musicians on stage at a time, they’ll have the power to thrash these songs the way they were meant to be thrashed.
