Visiting student arrested for assault with fire extinguisher in Foulke after Lawnparties

Public Safety officers arrested a man visiting campus after he allegedly started a fight with a Princeton student and sprayed a fire extinguisher at him in Foulke Hall after Lawnparties on Sunday.

The man, 21, was charged with criminal mischief and was later released on his own recognizance, Public Safety Deputy Director Charles Davall said in an e-mail.

The man, of Atherton, Calif., told Public Safety that he had been drinking on Prospect Avenue. He was the guest of another undergraduate, and was released to that student’s care, Davall said.

Public Safety received a call at 5:09 p.m. on Sunday reporting “a disturbance” in Foulke Hall, Davall said. When they arrived, officers found the man and the Princeton student, a senior, wrestling. Officers separated the two and determined that the incident started when the man allegedly dumped trash cans down a stairwell in Foulke.

The Princeton student then confronted the man, Davall said, allegedly prompting the man to begin fighting with the student. During the fight, the man also allegedly sprayed the student with a fire extinguisher and threw the extinguisher at the student.

The student, who was hit in the hand by the extinguisher, was taken to McCosh Health Center “but he was not injured,” Davall said.

The criminal mischief charge is a disorderly persons offense in New Jersey. The student declined to press an assault charge on the man, Davall added, explaining that “typically in criminal offenses, particularly in disorderly persons offenses, it is up to the victim if they want law enforcement to charge the person criminally.”

Public Safety Captain Donald Reichling said at the scene that he didn’t know if alcohol played a factor in the “altercation.” Davall said later that the man “appeared to be intoxicated and stated he had been drinking on Prospect Avenue during Houseparties.”

Davall added that the man attends a Berkeley college. A search of the University of California, Berkeley, website confirmed that the man is a student there.
