Mantel said he was disappointed with the outcome, but congratulated Kende.
“Sure, it’s a little disappointing to have come out on this end of a close election, but I think everybody’s glad to see it finally finish up,” Mantel said in an e-mail. “I’d like to congratulate Stefan and wish him the best in working for our class.”
Kende said he intends to continue holding popular study breaks for the class, expand community service programs and try to attract “some cool bands” for class formals.
The original vote for the position was called off after incumbent Gabrielle Cole was disqualified for multiple campaign violations. Mantel and Kende received the most votes among four candidates in the revote, advancing to last week’s runoff. USG president Yaroshefsky said in an e-mail that the delay in announcing the results was necessary to allow time for appeals.
“We want to be sure that any appeals that arise are settled before there is any chance of the vote tallies being accessible to anyone; releasing the results is strategically designed not to be a hasty process for this reason,” Yaroshefsky explained. “From that point, it is a matter of coordinating the schedule of four different people: the two trustees, the Helios technician and the USG president. That can be more challenging than it seems, and is the reason why it took until late Friday night to announce the results.”
Yaroshefsky said voter turnout for the runoff was low, but that he wasn’t surprised “considering that it is the third vote for this office.”
“Understandably, people get tired of voting by the third time,” he said. “We are always considering improvements to our elections, especially ways to increase voter turnout.”
