Cheryl LaFleur ’75 will be nominated as a commissioner of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, President Barack Obama announced earlier this month, filling a seat vacated by Suedeen Kelly.
The commission regulates the interstate transmission of natural gas, oil and electricity, and regulates natural gas and hydropower projects.
LaFleur has held leadership positions in the business and nonprofit arenas. Before retiring in 2007, she was the executive vice president and acting CEO of National Grid USA, an electricity company that supplies power to 3.4 million customers in the Northeast. In 2008, she became president and CEO of the Steppingstone Foundation, an educational nonprofit organization in Boston. She has also been a member of the boards of the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, the United Way of Central Massachusetts and the Massachusetts Business Roundtable, among other organizations.
LaFleur graduated with a degree in politics from the University before earning a law degree from Harvard in 1978.
