Oh my God. I think I just GZA'd my pants. That's right: Wu Tang is coming to Princeton. At midnight tonight, Terrace will have perhaps the year's most impressive live act in the form of Wu Tang co-founder and all-around hip-hop legend GZA. Renowned for his inimitable flow and complex lyricism (he confesses to spending months on each verse), the man is proof enough that hip hop is alive and kicking. His debut solo album "Liquid Swords" might also be the best hip-hop album ever made. The poor USG has got its work cut out getting a Lawnparties band, because quite frankly, it's going to have a hard time topping this one.
Opening for GZA is 64-year-old rapper-comedian Blowfly, who's credited by some with creating hip hop with his 1965 song "Rap Dirty." Which is pretty cool. And if that's not enough for you, the self-proclaimed "original dirty rapper" sure knows how to name his songs: "Shittin' on the Dock of Bay"? Genius.
On Saturday, boom boxes and turntables are traded in for laptops and drum-machines, and the general atmosphere is likely to be a bit more low-key. DJ trio Twigz will kick off the night on a pleasantly wistful note, with their hypnotic, found-sound electronica. They're followed by experimental electro-rockers Small Black, who were recently cited by Pitchfork on its "Best New Music" page for the heady low-fi haze of "Despicable Dogs." Fans of TV on the Radio and The Jesus and Mary Chain are encouraged to attend.
