Slow start for voter registration project

In a Sept. 30 e-mail, Evelyn Economy ’13, a campaign media intern for the group, said the organization had registered “a little over 100 voters.”

In an interview on Wednesday, Economy declined to give an updated total, but she said that this week alone the group was aiming to register 300 voters and was “about halfway there.”

The organization, new to campus this fall, has been recruiting potential voters and volunteers since Freshman Week as Election Day approaches. New Jersey is one of two states with a gubernatorial election this year, so the campaign has been aiming to register voters as New Jersey residents. Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine faces challenges from Republican candidate Chris Christie and independent candidate Chris Daggett.

In a separate effort, PVotes has registered roughly 130 voters, PVotes vice president Jacob Aronson ’11 said. Aronson is also a senior copy editor for The Daily Princetonian.

The Public Interest Research Group has set up tables in Frist Campus Center and across campus and is in the midst of its “Blitz Week,” in which it is tabling at Frist and participating in “dorm storms,” during which members will go door-to-door registering voters this week.

Economy stressed the importance of registering young voters, especially in New Jersey before the election. “Last year, so many people came out to vote,” she said.

“If we can at least get college students out to vote in higher numbers than they have historically, we can show politicians that we care about elections,” she added.
