The Monomeet comes to town this weekend and sets up shop at Terrace Club, bringing with it computerized, space-age sounds. Here's what you need to know:
Kicking things off Friday night is Digital Dust, a Brooklyn-based duo that claims to bridge the gap between the analog and digital eras. The brainchild of DJ Tes and Primus Maximus, the group uses turntables, laptops and monomes - cheap, funky, light-up toys that can be programmed to do just about anything - to put together a diverse set unlike anything you've ever heard. Their down-tempo trip-hop feels like chilled-out rock mashed with some heavy bass beats, making it some of Terrace's most danceable music all weekend.
Following Digital Dust is Tim Exile, a philosopher-turned-producer who once held a job as a computer programmer. An experimental musician in every sense of the word, the Londoner's shows use live-looping and beatboxing to create intricately layered, highly processed music on the fly. I've got to be honest: At times it sounds like Exile simply put a few computers in a room and had them all make error noises at once, but the sheer amount of activity in his live performance should make it an interesting experience.
Saturday at Terrace marks the beginning of the Monomeet, a day-long festival in honor of a tiny box that, even according to its creators, serves no real purpose. Luckily for those of us who aren't particularly excited by a bunch of flashing lights arranged in a square, Terrace has put together a solid nighttime lineup. The best act to grace the concert hall that evening will likely be the eclectic and highly accomplished Daedelus. The Los Angeles native, whose music still bears the mark of his jazz-loving parents, is a music industry favorite and the founder of the acclaimed internet radio station Dublab. He's worked with Animal Collective and shared stages with Girl Talk and DJ Nosaj Thing (himself an alumnus of Terrace), making his performance this Saturday the kind of once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that shouldn't be missed.
A word to the wise: This weekend will be more about the monomes than the music, so don't expect to run into Terrace ready to rock out. But look on the bright side: At least it'll be better than Milf N' Cookies.
