Allen earned a master’s in architecture from the University in 1988. He became the dean of the architecture school in 2002, succeeding Ralph Lerner, who was dean for 13 years.
As an educator, Allen has focused on linking the theoretical and practical aspects of architecture by bringing advanced computing techniques into the classroom.
Allen has received several other awards, including a Progressive Architecture Award from Architect Magazine for working on the redesign of the Yan Ping waterfront in Taipei, Taiwan. Allen also won a Design Award from the New York chapter of the American Institute of Architects for his involvement in the Chosen Children’s Village Chapel in Tagaytay, Philippines, and a Hejduk Award from the Cooper Union Alumni Association.
