“Currently, we are still awaiting certification of the elections results from the registrar’s office,” Jin said, adding that the Registrar is responsible for tabulating the votes and releasing the results to her. “I’ve contacted the people in charge of the tabulation to see if there are any issues that are causing the delay.”
Jin is also a staff photographer for the ‘Prince.’
Students voted this week for next year’s senior class president between candidates Phoebe Jin ’10 and Aditya Panda ’10. Other contested elections included those for Class of 2010 social chair, Class of 2011 vice president and social chair, and Class of 2012 president, vice president and treasurer.
Students also voted on five referenda: Two proposed reallocation of USG funds, one proposed that the USG should be required to release vote counts in all elections, one addressed the issue of administrators writing letters of recommendation for USG officials and the final one involved soliciting feedback on the University administration.
Though election results are often released to the campus community the same day voting closes, recent USG elections have also been plagued by delays.
In the freshman class election last October, there were several technical errors during the recording and counting processes, former USG senior elections manager Braeden Kepner-Kraus ’10 said in an interview with the ‘Prince’ in October. Revisions to the Point website caused problems with the election results stored on that server, he explained. Later, former USG webmaster Bruce Halperin ’09 forgot to send in the XML file recording the votes, Kepner-Kraus explained, and when the Registrar received the file, it had not been properly formatted.
Last April, the release of the results of the U-Councilor elections was also delayed after Halperin changed the scripting language of the online ballot, delaying the Registrar’s verification of the results.
