Cottage searches for stolen bronze eagle

“The eagle disappeared about a month ago and it was noticed as missing by our house manager,” Cottage president Ben Bologna ’10 said in an e-mail. “We have contacted the proper Borough and University authorities about our stolen item and are also running ads in local newspapers.”

Abby Gaynor, the club manager, explained that the eagle was donated to Cottage more than 100 years ago, but she added that the club “doesn’t want to get into the details” of the item’s value or theft.

“We regard the integrity of this mansion and the historical aspect of our club, and we hold it in high esteem and really value it,” she said. “It pains the alums and those who built this institution … We’re hoping someone comes forward to tell us where our eagle is.”

The club has notified its members and the presidents of the other eating clubs. It has also placed ads in local newspapers about the disappearance.

The eagle was donated by George Dewey, Class of 1896, to “honor his father Admiral George Dewey and his achievements in the Spanish American War,” according to a Cottage publication about the club’s history.

“We take the preservation of our clubhouse very seriously,” Bologna explained. “The theft of any item is a real tragedy for our membership and alumni and we are hopeful that we will be able to recover this item very soon.”

The theft comes seven weeks after a mounted deer head worth roughly $5,000 was stolen on Feb. 28 from Quadrangle Club. The trophy was returned three days later to the club’s back balcony. Quad president Zakory Burns ’10 said he set a 48-hour deadline after he was notified of the theft of the deer head for its return before he would contact Borough Police.

In addition to the eagle, Cottage boasts a number of other historical features. F. Scott Fitzgerald began his novel “This Side of Paradise” in the club’s library, which is modeled after Oxford’s Merton College library.
