Campus Picks — April 30, 2009

Film: Paul Blart: Mall Cop

Critics universally slammed "Paul Blart: Mall Cop," one of just two movies this year about a chubby, ugly mall security guard. Why on earth the movie's been chosen as the Fristfest Moonlight Movie, well, your guess is as good as mine; perhaps they know students won't be in exactly the right frame of mind for Tarkovsky, but still, I think they could have found something a little less braindead. If the trailer's anything to go by, the movie seems to be about a fat security guard repeatedly falling off his segway. I'm sure that'll go over great with the Public Safety officers patrolling the Street this weekend.

Event: Fristfest Picnic and Carnival

Want a free water bottle? How about a free teddy bear? Or maybe some free cookies? Ice cream? Caramel corn? Seriously, the University really, really wants to give you lots and lots of presents! Fristfest Weekend kicks off Thursday night with a picnic, carnival (replete with volleyball and speed stacking), live entertainment by student bands and, of course, freebies galore.

Food: The Tastes and Sounds of Princeton

Couldn't find a date for Houseparties? Have no fear, Fristfest is here! The weekend continues with a sampling of food from Princeton-area restaurants, accompanied by music.

Performance: Good Winks Here

Never were the tears of a sad, sad clown so ... sad. "Good Winks Here," the thesis production of Sam Zetumer '09, is, according to the description on Point (because I could never write a  better one), "a one-man show about a clown that is not a clown - no juggling or gags, but rather about a human being struggling to find out how his world works and why he is in pain." In other words, it's Pagliacci's diary brought to life.

Berlind Rehearsal Room

April 30, 10:30 p.m.

Performance: Sympoh presents Princeton Battlegrounds

Anyone else who also saw Sympoh's springtime show should know that it's probably not the best idea to pick a fight with a synchronized group of kick-swinging B-boys - far safer to let them just battle each other. Come support the Sympoh team in a dance-off against local B-boys in the annual "Princeton Battlegrounds" event. Princeton students are allowed to participate as well ... if you dare.

Liberation Hall at the Fields Center

Performance: Quipfire! HouseParties Shows

Everyone watching this show will not be drunk.

Art: Roxy Paine on the Roof: Maelstrom

Those looking for an alternative to the wild and superficial fun of Lawnparties should consider being "immersed in the midst of a cataclysmic force of nature" this weekend on the roof garden of the Met. Roxy Paine's 130-feet-long and 45-feet-wide stainless steel statue, Maelstrom, has just been installed, and if you prefer not to jam out to a mediocre band in mediocre weather, I can't think of any better way to spend your pre-Reading Period weekend.

The Cantor Roof Garden at The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Through October 25

(Weather permitting)

Event: Brooklyn Flea Market

For freshmen who won't be attending Houseparties this year, take advantage of your newfound freedom from classes and travel to the "Brooklyn Flea." You'll find everything from handmade cheeses from Vermont to vintage kimonos, all of which, of course, will prove essential to you during impending finals.
