Queen Elizabeth II has honored history professor Linda Colley and her husband, history lecturer David Cannadine, for their service to the British Empire. Colley, whose focus is on British history since 1700, is now a Commander in the Order of the British Empire (CBE), while Cannadine was granted knighthood as a Knights Bachelor.
Colley has published several books, including “Britons: Forging the Nation, 1707-1837,” which was a New York Times Notable Book of 1992. She has been honored as an overseas citizen for her contributions to the study of British history.
The Order of the British Empire was created in 1917 by George V to recognize service of all kinds in the first “total” war. It now has both a military and civil division. The Order has five levels: Knight or Dame Grand Cross, Knight or Dame Commander, Commander, Officer and Member.
Cannadine is a British historian as well. His scholarship focuses on the modern period in British history from 1800 to 2000. Cannadine was recognized for his services in scholarship.
