The Regional Planning Board of Princeton approved a proposal on Thursday for a major expansion and renovation of the Nassau Inn, according to the Princeton Packet.
The proposal, a revision of a 1998 plan, includes significant renovation of the existing Nassau Inn facilities, as well as the construction of a six-story addition along Hulfish Street and a three-story building at the site of the one-story Lindt Chocolate store on Palmer Square West.
The Planning Board granted the Nassau Inn permission for the six-story structure, despite zoning restrictions that allow only five stories. It also allowed the Nassau Inn to exceed the mandated maximum structure height of 65 feet when renovating the building. The Board also waived a Borough requirement calling for the addition of 69 parking spaces.
Former Borough Mayor and Planning Board member Marvin Reed told The Daily Princetonian in February that parking was a key issue in the renovation of the Inn and that community residents were concerned that inadequate parking could lead to cars spilling over onto neighborhood streets.
Reed also told the ‘Prince’ that hotel officials wanted to complete as much of the renovation as possible between the University’s 2008 and 2009 Commencements. According to the Packet, however, Nassau Inn General Manager Lori Rabon said that construction is not likely to begin until the fourth quarter of 2009.
