Though this year both Quad and Colonial Club approached the USG social committee about sponsoring Lawnparties concerts, ultimately only Quad was selected to receive USG funding.
Though without financial support from USG for a Lawnparties band, Colonial will be hosting Eve 6 to perform at 3 p.m., club president Beau Thomas ’09 said.
Two bands, Ruby Suns and the Walkmen, will play at Terrace Club, Cloister Inn will host Sister Hazel, and Charter Club will host Gonzo’s Nose, a cover band, presidents from the three clubs confirmed.
USG social chair Christian Husby ’08 said in an e-mail that the decision to fund Quad instead of Colonial for Lawnparties bands came after “the USG social committee listened to presentations by both clubs, and then discussed the options.”
Because co-sponsoring one concert consumes a majority of the social committee’s budget, Hubsy said, the USG was unable to fund multiple clubs.
Husby added that the committee “took into account the size of our budget, the size and ability to close off the lawn, comments from students and others, the proposals, as well as the desire to have one large event, rather than multiple small events.”
“Quad has successfully co-sponsored … event[s] with the USG many times,” USG president Josh Weinstein ’09 said in an e-mail. Weinstein added that he looks forward to the concert. “It’s definitely going to be one of the most exciting Houseparties.”
Thomas said that he was initially disappointed after being denied USG funding to hire a band, explaining in an e-mail that Colonial wanted to offer students an alternative to Quad’s large-scale concert.
“Four other clubs tried to get [Eve 6], so we are excited to get them,” he said.
Because Colonial hired the group with its own funding, there will be no USG or Alcohol Initiative restrictions at the concert, Thomas said.
“I would say that it was a good thing that we didn’t get the USG funding, since it led to us having a better band without the need to be dry for members,” he noted.
Thomas explained that the reason Colonial applied for USG funding was “not necessarily to replace Quad’s large-scale concert but to complement it with a smaller event with alternative bands to appeal to those not interested in fighting massive crowds to get a view of the stage.”

Aku Ammah-Tagoe ’11 said she would much rather go to a smaller show with alternative musical groups and is disappointed with the band selection at Quad.
“New Found Glory is a little out of date,” she said. “I have never enjoyed their music, and I don’t know a lot of people who ever did.” Nevertheless, she said “it seems like an appropriate choice for an outdoor concert.”
Husby said the Quad event will offer free food and Houseparties T-shirts for $10. He added that though the concert will not be sponsored by Alcohol Initiative, alcohol will be absent from the premises.
Raymond Hsu ’11 said he would be likely to attend the concert at Quad. “I like well- known bands,” he said.
