Dear Sarah

You think you've planned everything perfectly. From the time you were accepted to Princeton in December, you spent hours mapping out your ideal undergraduate experience. Late at night, you scoured websites, the registrar's course guide and thefacebook.com for every class you will take, extracurricular you will join and person you think will make a good friend. You loved high school, and your nagging fear of change has led you to plan each minute step to take control of your new life.

Upon arrival, you succeed in carrying out many of these plans. Of course, everything is better than you imagined, but nothing is unexpected. Little by little, though, this changes. Slowly at first, you notice small parts of life have not gone as planned. These changes are frustrating: A course filled with upperclassmen before you could get in, and the debate team was too rigorous. Soon, you are disappointed by the accumulating change, and before you know it, you are home for Fall Break wondering what happened to the perfect college experience you had so carefully constructed.

Please, don't spend your time seeking out what you expected and analyzing what you can do to set yourself on track. Instead, remember that you will be content, even happier, without a set plan. The parts of Princeton you will enjoy are often unexpected. Fun nights with friends, random adventures, late-night talks and unforgettable classes would be far less memorable if they had been pre-decided. So relax, let go, and enjoy everything that comes your way!
