Robertson case trial date set
The high-profile battle between the University and the Robertson family will go to trial on Oct. 1, 2008, Mercer County Superior Court Judge Maria Sypek announced in a statement yesterday.
The announcement comes nearly a week after Sypek replaced Mercer County Superior Court Judge Neil Shuster, who has presided over the Robertson case since it was filed six years ago.
Though Oct. 1 was set as a target date in a previous conference between the court and the lawyers for the University and the Robertson family, Sypek did not confirm it as the start of the trial until yesterday.
One of the largest lawsuits ever regarding “donor intent,” the complaint in the Robertson case was filed on July 17, 2002. The family of the late Marie and Charles Robertson ’26 claims that the University has not used the donation to the Wilson School properly.
Harvard appoints first woman dean of the college
Since 2002, the role of the dean of Harvard College, who focuses on undergraduate life, has been separate from that of the dean of undergraduate education, who handles academic matters.
Harvard’s Dean of the Faculty Michael Smith told the Crimson yesterday that Hammonds deserves the post “independent” of her gender and race.
Hammonds is senior vice provost for faculty development and diversity and a tenured professor in both the history of science and the African and African-American studies departments at Harvard. In her current job, Hammonds advises the president and provost on issues concerning recruitment and the advancement of women and minorities in faculty positions.
