Tilghman among Glamour honorees

President Tilghman is among 21 recipients of Glamour magazine's 2007 Women of the Year award. She and her fellow honorees will be featured in a photo portfolio in the publication's Nov. 13 issue.

Tilghman was chosen along with three other female Ivy League presidents: Ruth Simmons of Brown, Amy Gutmann of Penn and Drew Gilpin Faust of Harvard.

"In awarding this prize to the four Ivy presidents, I believe Glamour Magazine is recognizing two things — the importance of education as a means for women to assume positions in leadership in the world, and the recent success that women are having in taking on positions of leadership in the academy," Tilghman said in an email.

According to a statement from Glamour, Tilghman and her three colleagues were selected for "inspiring the next generation of female leadership." The article also noted that half of all Ivy League schools are now headed by women.

Tilghman said she was particularly excited because of the formative role Princeton played in the careers of three of the four presidents. Besides Tilghman, two of the other presidents served as faculty and administrators at the University before assuming their current leadership positions.

Simmons served as a director of studies at Butler College and then as an associate dean at the University from 1983 to 1990, while Gutmann was a professor and then provost from 1976 to 2004.

"I would particularly mention the role that Harold Shapiro played in mentoring President Simmons, Gutmann and myself," Tilghman said. Shapiro, who led the University from 1988 to 2000, preceded Tilghman as president.

Besides Tilghman and her three fellow Ivy League leaders, Glamour's list of honorees includes "Grey's Anatomy" creator Shonda Rhimes, fashion designer Donna Karan, CBS News chief foreign correspondent Lara Logan and entertainers Jennifer Garner and "Little Miss Sunshine" star Abigail Breslin. Elizabeth Edwards — an advocate for healthcare reform, wife of presidential candidate John Edwards and mother of Cate Edwards '04 — also made the list.

"I think Glamour has assembled a very interesting group of awardees this year," Tilghman said. "Each awardee has accomplished something of importance over the last few years."

Honorees are chosen by Glamour's Women of the Year Advisory Board, which is comprised of past winners of the award. In previous years, notable recipients of the honor have included Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and University professor emeritus and Nobel Prizewinning writer Toni Morrison.

This year's Women of the Year award comes as Glamour is launching its Humanitarian Initiative, which will raise money for charities that support causes chosen by the award's recipients.

Though not all of her fellow honorees are lifelong academics or University leaders, Tilghman expressed no concern about being on a list that includes an 11-year-old comedic actress.
