USG plans to sell energy bars, sports drinks in Dillon Gym

The USG plans to open a cafe in Dillon Gym the Monday after Fall Break.

"We started to discuss the idea last spring. At the moment, the logistics are tentative, but we are excited," USG president Rob Biederman '08 said.

The cafe will be open from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., and menu items will include Gatorade, Vitamin Water and energy bars.

"The cafe will be less complex and more informal than Frist['s]," Biederman explained. Once the USG has established the cafe, Dining Services is expected to take over.

Elizabeth Borges '11, a frequent gym user, was enthusiastic about the plan.

"I often feel hungry when I leave the gym, and I don't feel like the gross stuff in the vending machines, so the cafe is a great idea in my view," Borges said.

The cafe, simply called the Dillon Cafe for now, will be located near the LCD television in the lobby. A few chairs and tables will be available for seating.

Lauren Barnett '08, the USG undergraduate life chair, is glad that there will be healthy food and drink options for students leaving the gym.

"It will greatly improve the Dillon Gym facility overall," she said.

There have been discussions about major renovations to Dillon, but the plans remain tentative, Associate Athletic Director David Leach said, adding that Dillon Cafe is intended to serve as a temporary solution and as a precursor to further changes.

Though Dillon Gym management is concerned that the cafe may require more room, it is still open to the idea, Leach added. "Some students already watch sports on our TV in the lobby, so there's definitely a market. And if it's what the students want, then why not?"
