Stepping into Rebecca Gold '09's room is an instant escape from the dreary hallways and wan lighting of the Junior Slums. Vibrant colors, patterned fabrics and vintage lamps have transformed this typical Princeton dorm room into a bedroom to be envied.
"I asked myself what Kafka's girlfriend's bedroom would look like, and I tried to design it in that style," Gold said. "I also tried to imagine what stepping into someone's bedroom in 1850s Bohemia would be. I tried to design it to feel like you were there."
The paint color is the most noticeable of Gold's changes. All four walls have been painted deep purple, a color Gold says she chose for its relaxing feel. It is the decorations, however, which truly make the room her own. The walls boast an eclectic array of artwork, with brocade curtains overshadowing the built-in blinds. "One of the paintings was done by my grandmother when she was in college," she said, gesturing to the large frame that hangs above her bed.
While the Bohemian style that Gold chose to emulate is alive in every detail of the room, some of Gold's friends have put their own spin on it. "People come in and are like, 'oh it's an opium den,' which is a new take on it that I didn't realize," Gold said. No matter what the interpretation, the finished room is ornate and comfortable. "I've really enjoyed it so far," Gold said. "I think I'm putting it to good use."
