The Castle

In the highest room of the highest tower of Whitman College live two roommates, Bud Grote '08 and Martin Jancik '08. At 588 sq. ft., their split-level double in a building that looks like a castle is a far cry from the 145-foot double they shared in Gauss Hall as freshmen. Being fifth in the Whitman draw will do that for you.

Sitting on his leather couch, Grote looks like a man at peace with his kingdom. "I like toys," he says, gesturing toward the flat-screen TV stretched across the wall beneath a stairwell leading to the second-story sleeping area.

The overall decor is reminiscent of Linens-n-Things suburbia, from framed, ambiguously ethnic art to beige tassels, with tags still attached, hanging from the stylized, faux-bronze stair railing. "Yeah, we haven't decided where to put those yet," Grote says.

But living so lavishly affords few moments of privacy. "We can't prop our door open, not even to go take a shower or something. One time in the beginning of the year, we came back, and a bunch of guys were sitting here on the couch watching TV," Grote recalls. "We didn't even know them."
