Notaro revisits campus for frosh week laughs

Comedian Tig Notaro returned to Princeton on Thursday for the third time, performing to mixed reviews before an audience of 1,000 students in Dillon Gym.

The Mississippi native wasted no time launching into her opening joke as she took the stage. "My foot's been asleep all day," she said. "Yeah, so if you could just keep it down ... that's perfect."

In anticipation of another packed show like Notaro's two previous performances at the University, 1,600 seats were set up in the gymnasium. Notaro appeared last November as the opening act for comedian Sarah Silverman and as a solo performer later in the year at the Berlind Theatre.

But despite Notaro's previous popularity at the University, many of those in attendance at her Thursday night show expressed disappointment with her latest performance.

Becca Levin '10, who said she had seen all three of Notaro's shows at Princeton, said she was frustrated with the comedian's lack of original material. "When I heard her jokes for the first time, I loved them," Levin said. "The second time they were still funny. By the third time I was thinking, 'What am I doing here?' "

As some audience members expressed similar irritations aloud during the performance, Notaro attempted to increase audience enthusiasm by giving away the decorative plants on the stage and extending an open invitation for hecklers to voice their criticisms.

"Do you have any new material?" one such heckler asked aloud during the performance. "I saw your show last time and you said the same s—t!"

In an interview after the show, Notaro expressed optimism about the performance and said she didn't mind vocal audience critics.

"It's not that I enjoy getting heckled," Notaro said. "I just enjoy interacting with the audience, and usually there's something interesting in there. Sometimes it doesn't lead where you hope it will."

"It was ... you know, I had a good time," she added.
