Must love pucks: Tigers seek goalie

The women's hockey team is in need of a backup goaltender, and the Tigers aren't being bashful about it.

Around campus, flyers are sprouting up requesting that all interested and available netminders contact Princeton head coach Jeff Kampersal regarding the Tigers' roster vacancy.

Princeton currently has just one goalie on its roster, in the person of junior Kristen Young. She was the Tiger starter last season, appearing in 21 of 31 games en route to an 11-5-3 record and a .921 save percentage.

Neither of Young's two backups from 2006-07, however, remain with the team. Sophomore Brittany Parisi and senior Rebecca Allen both saw action in net last year but are no longer listed on the Princeton roster. Of the Tigers' four recruits from the Class of 2011, none are goaltenders.

The bizarre circumstances could result in NCAA sanctions. Rule 2, Section 3a of the NCAA rulebook states that any team traveling to an away game with less than two goaltenders on its roster will be forced to forfeit the game. A backup goaltender must be on the bench at the outset of every game and must remain on the bench in uniform for the duration of the contest.

Kampersal declined to comment, as did a number of members of the team contacted by The Daily Princetonian.

Princeton, which finished fourth in the Eastern Conference Athletic Conference Hockey League (ECACHL) last season with a 16-12-3 record, will now likely have to look to the women's club ice hockey team for a last-minute roster addition.

The backup may not ultimately need to be relied upon too heavily, as Young has proven herself to be among the ECACHL's best. She made 480 saves as a sophomore last season, posting a goals-against average of just 2.06.

Parisi appeared just as capable as Young as a freshman, allowing just 2.12 goals per game while saving almost 89 percent of shots against her. Allen appeared in just two games last year, making two saves.

Neither Allen or Parisi was available for comment.

The flyer, which reads "The Princeton Varsity Women's Hockey Team is looking for a backup goalie," lists Kampersal's University phone number and email address as contact information for potential respondents.
