Finnie '84 heads UHS in interim

Daniel Silverman, who spent five years overseeing the University's health operations, resigned from University Health Services (UHS) last month.

Silverman, who was executive director of UHS and University chief medical officer, has been replaced by Janet Finnie '84, UHS chief operating officer, who will serve as interim director until a permanent replacement is hired.

Finnie, who has worked in UHS' administration since 2000, said in an email that she is "deeply and sincerely grateful, and consider[s] it an honor, to work with a truly extraordinary, fabulous staff of clinical providers and administrative staff here at UHS."

She has worked closely with Silverman, making for a smooth transition, University spokeswoman Cass Cliatt '96 said, praising Finnie's "working knowledge of the health center and its operations" in an email.

As interim director, Finnie hopes to be able to "ensure a smooth transition to a new executive directorship, to work on operational excellence, improving privacy and confidentiality for students, and building the cultural competence of our staff."

The University will conduct a national search to find a permanent replacement for Silverman. UHS will continue to conduct research, especially on college health issues such as depression, self-injurious behavior and alcohol use, Finnie said.

The UHS staff, she added, works "passionately and tirelessly" to help students physically and emotionally. "I love working with them. It is a busy, exciting, fascinating place to work."

Before starting work at UHS, Finnie spent five years at Pennsylvania Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania Health System in Philadelphia. She has also worked at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago and did clinical work with emotionally disturbed adolescents at Boston University.

Finnie has a master of social work degree from Boston University and a master of business administration from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University.

Finnie and her family have long been connected with the University. In addition to being a Princeton alumna, Finnie grew up in the area. Her father, Bruce Finnie, was the University registrar from 1969 to 1984 and also served as the director of administrative services. Finnie's brother and sister also attended the University.
