The USG approved nominations for U-Council Chair and USG Executive Committee members and discussed funding for student groups yesterday at its last meeting of the year.
Sarah Langberg '09 will replace Liz Gough '07 as U-Council chair next semester. Maria Salciccioli '09 and Matt Field '08 will serve as Executive Committee co-members, a position that Gough also previously held.
The USG Projects Board announced its intention to give money to four student organizations, though some senators expressed doubt as to whether two of the groups should be given so much financial support.
"Oh So Fresh" magazine, for example, received a $2,000 loan from the Projects Board for its next issue, which will come out in about a week. The magazine is to repay the loan in the fall, once donations for the May issue are collected.
Some senators expressed concern about whether the loan would eventually be repaid, questioning the quality of the magazine's previous issue.
Projects Board co-chair Will Wallace '09 said the quality of the magazine's next issue will not disappoint. "They walked in, and we were going to send them right back out the door, but then they showed us the issue," he said.
Jennifer R. Smith '08, also a Projects Board co-chair, said this issue looks much better than the fall's. Smith said she had seen a preview of this semester's issue.
The Black Men's Awareness Group (BMAG) also received funding, $1100 dollars for its annual women's appreciation dinner, Wallace said.
He added that the money came out of a banquet fund and was necessary for BMAG to put on its annual formal dinner this year. "For this event to occur, basically we need to do this ... I think it should be approved," he said.
Sustained Dialogue and the Japanese Student Association each received smaller amounts from the Projects Board for a scavenger hunt and picnic respectively.
Nominations for the Honor Committee, Committee on Discipline and the Judicial Committee were presented by Bennett Glassman '08, the current clerk of the Honor Committee, who will serve as chair of that committee in the fall. The Senate approved each nomination.
USG president Rob Biederman '08 said that along with the Joan Jett and the Blackhearts performance on Dean's Date next week, students should stay tuned for an additional USG surprise announcement. The band will perform in the Brown-Dod Courtyard at 5:15 p.m.
