Suspected thief arrested at Cap

Borough Police arrested a sophomore at Cap & Gown Club on Saturday night after a member observed him rifling through jackets in the club's coatroom. It is unclear whether the student has been charged with theft.

"I just stood there and watched him at the edge of the coatroom," said an undergraduate who was in the club at the time and was granted anonymity because he was uncertain about the outcome of the case. "I didn't jump to conclusions. It was clear, once he had gone through three or four coats, what he was doing." He added that the sophomore did not notice his presence, as "[the suspect] was preoccupied with his work."

The member alerted the club's bouncers, who cornered the suspect in the coatroom.

"As soon as they got to the coatroom, he was trapped," the member said, adding that the suspect "was denying [any wrongdoing] on the spot."

The bouncers called Borough Police, who arrived within 20 minutes. The individual in question was kept in the coatroom, while both members and nonmembers were asked to remain in the basement and were not allowed back upstairs.

Once the police arrived, the suspect was handcuffed and taken to the Borough Police station in a squad car. The arrested sophomore could not be reached and Borough Police declined to comment for this article.

Cap officers declined to comment as no officer was present in the room when the arrest was made.

The arrest comes in the wake of a wave of thefts at several eating clubs earlier this month.

Wallets were stolen from backpacks and handbags at Cap, Ivy, Quadrangle, Terrace, Tiger Inn and Tower at lunchtime on April 30. The thefts occurred between noon and 1 p.m., and The Daily Princetonian later reported that stolen credit cards were used to make purchases at nearby stores.

It is uncertain at this time if the two incidents are related.
