Nolan McCarty will take over for Wilson School Dean Anne-Marie Slaughter '80 when she goes on sabbatical for the 2007-08 academic year.
McCarty, associate dean of the Wilson School, came to Princeton in 2001 from Columbia. He specializes in American politics, democratic political institutions and political game theory.
"He is increasingly my partner in running the school," Slaughter said in an interview. She explained that McCarty handles the Wilson School's curriculum and "a tremendous amount of the management" already.
McCarty holds both a Ph.D. and M.S. in political economy from Carnegie Mellon and spent his undergraduate years at the University of Chicago. He has written articles on a diverse range of topics, from presidential veto rights to political resource allocation and has published two books.
A member of the American Political Science Association and the Midwest Political Science Association, McCarty taught FRS 147: Polarized America this fall.
The Office of the Dean of the Faculty made the final decision on McCarty's appointment, Slaughter said, and the faculty have been informed of the choice. McCarty could not be reached for comment last night.
Slaughter will be using her sabbatical year to live and research in China with her husband, politics professor Andrew Moravcsik, and their two sons.
"It's been a great five years but a very busy five years," Slaughter said of her decision to take leave from the University. "I plan on spending the time reading the books I haven't had a chance to read. This is a genuine year of reading, exploration and reflection."
Since becoming dean in 2002, Slaughter has worked to expand the school, recruiting professors specializing in international relations and encouraging new programs such as the Scholars in the Nation's Service Initiative.
