I believe that chivalry is alive and well, but many individuals would oppose this viewpoint and contend that gentility does not exist on the Princeton campus. Yet, if we are all willing to take time out of our self-absorbed schedules and look at what's going on around us, we would see a man opening the door of Frist to let a woman walk through first; we would see another guy help an overloaded girl pick up the books and papers she has just dropped in front of McCosh; or we would see some dude go out of his way to make sure that a slightly intoxicated girl made it back to her room from the Street safely.
We think these occasions are rare because we're too pessimistic to believe that someone would do something "just because." But I encourage you to not fall into this cynical way of thinking. Polite gestures are things that make life sweeter and more enjoyable. If we take them for granted, we lose sight of something that makes the daily grind exciting and worthwhile.
