Flood halts Colonial initiations

A sprinkler leak in Colonial Club last Saturday morning caused water damage in the dining hall, kitchen and officers' bedrooms, placing the building off-limits until at least the end of this week, club officers said yesterday.

"This is a real inconvenience for everyone involved, but I don't think it will have a significant impact on the club membership," Colonial president Tommy Curry '08 said.

A ceiling in the former officers' bedrooms will need to be replaced, but the greatest concern is mold growth in the affected areas, he added.

Colonial officers worked with the University to create a temporary meal plan for current members until the drying process is complete. Each club member will get a TigerCard meal card for two meals per day at any of the residential college dining halls and 10 points per day at Frist.

Though the damage interferes with normal meal schedules, club members said they think the University administration and club officers are alleviating the situation as much as possible.

"I definitely feel like I've been cared for," said Whitney Spalding '07, a member of Colonial. "I'm really surprised how these officers have dealt with all of this, just after being elected."

Colonial's sign-in events for this week were rescheduled until after repairs take place, as the fire marshal has required additional tests before allowing the club to reopen.

Nevertheless, Colonial pickups proceeded on schedule last night in a heated tent on the club's front lawn. Colonial will also host the cover band Fuzzy Bunny Slippers on Thursday and a party with a DJ on Saturday in the same location.

Recently signed-in sophomores said the damage didn't dampen their enthusiasm about their new club.

"The key factor for me about joining a club is the food and who else is there, so this didn't really affect my decision," Lily Miao '09 said.

Colonial experienced a similar incident during winter break in 2001, when a sprinkler in an officer's room caused $15,000 worth of damage after seeping through the kitchen and dining room into the basement.

Presidents of other sign-in clubs said they wish their neighbor on Prospect Avenue a speedy recovery.

"This is the kind of thing that every club has to deal with once in a while," Charter Club president Will Scharf '08 said. "I don't think it will offset sign-in results. I hope no one will change their decision to join the club based on this."

Charter offered to allow Colonial members to eat at their club until the repairs were completed, Scharf said, but Colonial officers declined.

"We should be up and running by next week," Curry said, "and I'm ready to show the new sign-ins what Colonial is all about."
