It would be hard not to notice all the construction that is going on around campus. From Whitman College to the new neuroscience and arts buildings, it is clear that the University is finally providing the space students need when it comes to dorm and academic life. Nevertheless, we cannot help but notice several kinds of spaces which students are in need of but have received little attention from the University.
Out of all the student groups on campus, the vast majority do not have their own storage space. While some student groups used to have lockers in Frist, those lockers were removed during recent renovations. Now, most club officers are left fighting with their roommates over precious common room corners. What these groups badly need is a student activities center in a centrally located building where student groups can store t-shirts and banners and even have officer meetings and small events.
But the shortage of space is not just an issue for extracurricular activities. It affects post-graduation activities as well. As the senior recruiting season runs on, it is increasingly clear how much students also need a career services office in a more convenient location. While the space on Nassau Street is incredibly useful for meeting with recruiters, the popularity of resume days in Frist suggests that many students would benefit from quick and more convenient consultations with career services staff members. This might be accomplished by moving the current Career Services office to a more central location or by establishing a satellite office.
We understand that as big as the Princeton campus is, we have limited space, and it is a difficult task to find space for these and other facilities given the campus' current layout. It is simply impossible to find locations for student services that are convenient for every student and for student group activities that fit all the needs of every student group. That being said, as the University nears the completion of its 10-year campus plan, it should keep in mind these other perhaps less obvious student needs as well.
