Freshmen Connor Diemand-Yauman and J. Brendan McGuire will compete in a runoff for the Class of 2010 presidency, the USG announced earlier this evening. Runoff voting will last 24 hours, starting tomorrow at noon.
The election — which concluded this afternoon — boasted 17 candidates for president and 19 candidates for vice president, secretary, treasurer and social chair. A runoff will be held between the top two vote-getters for each position, since no student received a majority of the votes.
More than 67 percent of the class — 834 students — voted in the election. Elections manager and USG vice president Rob Biederman '08 declined to give further details on the voting results, but said that "there were no blowouts."
Diemand-Yauman said in an email to The Daily Princetonian that he hopes to go beyond organizing class events, and "would like to combine the efforts of the Class of 2010 with those of various volunteer groups around campus" to expand community service events.
"I understand that providing free food and Princeton gear for students is something that everyone enjoys, but these things seem trivial when compared to what we can accomplish for those who are in desperate need of help," he said.
McGuire said in his candidate statement that "yes, this is Princeton, we are the number one school in America, but we're not perfect." He explained that he would attempt to extend late meals over the weekend, provide freshmen with "insane amounts of gear," and work to facilitate the cleaning of dorm suite bathrooms.
"I think additional money for the maintenance crew is very worthy of Princeton funds," McGuire's statement said. He could not be reached for comment.
The runoff for freshman vice president will be between Fatu Conteh and Conor Pigott, and for secretary between Peter Baltera and Phoebe Jin. Merritt Hummer and Aditya Panda will compete for treasurer, and Michael Chou and Jacob Kosior for social chair.
"The election went very smoothly," Biederman said.
Freshmen will vote again for class officers at the end of the year, during the general USG elections. That vote will determine who will serve as class officers next year.
