The future of late meal remains unclear, even after dining services responded to student pressure by testing an earlier late dinner Wednesday and Thursday. The trials aimed to determine whether an earlier time would reduce student attendance at the dining halls.
Late dinner began at 8:30 p.m. both days, instead of the 9 p.m. time instituted this year. Students had complained that the later start made it difficult to eat dinner at a convenient time, particularly after sports practices.
Last spring, USG senator Josh Weinstein '09 authored a petition calling for dining services to return to the earlier time. The petition has since been signed by almost 1,300 students.
"I'm very happy and grateful to [dining services director Stu] Orefice for giving us those trial runs," Weinstein said. "If they really want to go about making four-year colleges, they should have Frist available as an option."
Managers on duty in Frist Campus Center on Thursday night said they didn't yet know how successful the trials were. While a campus-wide power outage hampered the success of Wednesday's test, Thursday night's late dinner ran more smoothly.
Late meal is currently available for lunch from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and for dinner from 9 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. The dining halls close at 8 p.m.
"I know [earlier late dinner] works best for students," Frist assistant manager Matthew Karczewski said.
But the times were changed because of concern that late meal draws students away from the college dining halls, counter to the University's plans for strong four-year colleges.
Frist is designed as support for the residential colleges, and the two coordinate their hours of operation, Karczewski said. "We do try to work with the residential dining halls," he said.
But students at the late meal Thursday night said they prefer the earlier times.
"We don't get out [of practice] until 7:30 and by the time we get ice, go to the trainer, it's 8:30 and we're hungry and we don't want to wait an hour," said Doug Wolf '09, a member of the varsity sprint football team. "Need to feed the calves."
