Frosh gather for election info

Over 50 freshmen crammed into a USG conference room in Frist last night to learn about class government election procedures and munch on pizza.

Several current USG officers explained the election rules to the large, diverse crowd of potential candidates.

"We love seeing all these people who are interested in running," USG president Alex Lenahan '07 said.

He added that several freshmen had already emailed USG officers to ask about the campaign process.

USG vice president Rob Biederman '08 presided over the informational meeting. Biederman, who is serving as senior elections manager, banged a gavel occasionally, more for humor than decorum.

"I was thrilled by the turnout," Biederman said. "I think [the freshmen] seemed eager, and they were curious about the finer points of the elections rules."

The freshmen who showed up to the meeting included both novices and veterans of student government elections.

"I came from the British educational system, which didn't have elections as such," potential candidate Vanessa Folkerts '10 said.

Another hopeful, Jake Dale '10, said he had run in "a fair number" of student government elections before coming to the University.

"I think running for class president is part of the freshman experience," Dale said.
