Wireless disruptions over weekend frustrate students

University wireless service has been punctuated with sporadic disruptions this weekend, frustrating students across campus.

According to the OIT website, "an issue with the Wireless Access Points servicing the campus wireless network" is causing interruptions in user connectivity. It is currently unknown how many students have been affected.

"There is a sporadic problem with wireless connections on campus, and when it occurs people in the area of an affected access point lose their connectivity temporarily," University spokeswoman Cass Cliatt '96 said in an email. "The situation corrects itself and data starts flowing again."

Dozens of students with wireless-capable laptops, both PCs and Macs, have emailed OIT with complaints.

"They appear to still be connected to the wireless network and still have good signal strength, but they are unable to receive any traffic," the OIT outage announcement blog reported. "Repairing the connection or renewing the DHCP [a protocol for assigning network addresses] lease sometimes appears to be a temporary workaround."

Though its source has not yet been discovered, the problem was isolated as of Friday afternoon, Cliatt said. "OIT is working very closely with the vendor of the wireless access points to track down the problem and get it resolved."

"It isn't possible to give an accurate estimate of how many laptops have experienced the wireless interruptions because of their fluctuating nature," Cliatt added.

The OIT outage announcement blog is also reporting an "Email Systems Delay" caused by overloaded central processing units.
