Senior distance runner Eric Beights is an elder statesman of the men's cross country season this fall. Among his notable achievements, the versatile Naples, Fla., native has placed at the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships in both middle and long distance events for both indoor and outdoor track. The Tigers opened their season last weekend with a second-place finish on their home course at the Princeton Invitational, where Beights finished the eight-kilometer course in a time of 26 minutes, 10.9 seconds, good enough for 22nd place.
What was your 'welcome to college-sports' moment?
When Paul Lyons whipped his towel off and shouted 'welcome to college sports', I knew something was different.
What is the greatest highlight of your sports career?
I went to Rialto and asked for a sporty blonde doo and those were the greatest highlights I ever had.
What's the funniest story about your coach?
Coach Dolan has a really hot wife.
What's your most embarrassing moment?
I once made a small, purple training room towel into a diaper using laundry hooks. I was dancing around like a fool when Russ Steves, the trainer, came into the locker room and asked for his towel back. I sheepishly handed it to him while he smirked oddly.
Do you have any hidden talents?
Woodworking. Sometimes you'll even catch me air-whittling.
Best part about being an athlete?
The masseur.
Worst part?
We are exposed daily to something called "staph".
What's your favorite thing to do when not practicing?
As a team? Gotta be leaping out of a full van when we arrive at running locations and freaking to 'Real Big' on the stereo.
What's your favorite class you've taken at Princeton?
Madness in Modern Fiction. Sharon Allen, if you're out there, I love you, shorty.
Favorite thing to do on the Street?
Club Golf and Gin Buckets with turkey basters.
Who on your team has the 'most game off the field'?
Cameron Marantz is short and nasally, but spits game that makes you say 'what?'
What is that crazy glass box next to Jadwin?
Architecture students use this unconventional building to practice construction of wood and vinyl siding, eves, insulation and modern electrical wiring configurations.
